LO
The mortgage professional who guides you through the loan application, helps you choose a product, and quarterbacks your file from application to closing. Often your main point of contact.
Your loan officer is the person at the lender who works directly with you through the mortgage process. Their job is to understand your financial situation, recommend the right loan product, take your application, gather your documents, and quarterback your file through underwriting and closing.
A good loan officer is part advisor, part project manager, part advocate. They should explain options without pressure, be upfront about costs, and stay in regular communication — especially when something needs your attention. They're licensed and registered through the NMLS (Nationwide Multistate Licensing System), and their NMLS ID should be on every disclosure and email.
If you're not sure you're getting the right service, you can ask questions, push back on fees, or switch lenders. Loan officers compete for your business — use that.
Example
Your Benchmark loan officer, NMLS #123456, walks you through three loan options for your $400K purchase: a 30-year fixed, a 7/1 ARM, and a 15-year fixed. She explains pros and cons of each, gets your application, then guides you through the next 30 days to closing.
