Military Housing Area

Also written as:

MHA

A DoD-defined geographic zone used to set local BAH rates based on area housing costs.

A Military Housing Area is a geographic zone — defined by the Department of Defense around groupings of ZIP codes — used to set local Basic Allowance for Housing rates. Each MHA's rates reflect local median rental and utility costs, which is why the same pay grade receives very different BAH in, say, rural Texas versus San Diego.
